The Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria ACPN, Oby Ezekwesili on Wednesday have assured Nigerian teachers that her government will prioritize the welfare of teachers and make the profession more attractive.

She disclosed that her administration will provide them with befitting accommodation.

The ACPN candidate also talked about how poverty had crippled the Nigerian Education sector.

According to a statement released by the spokesperson for the Obiageli Ezekwesili Presidential Campaign Organisation, Ozioma Ubabukoh, the presidential candidate wondered why it had become difficult for Nigerian teachers to have accommodative and conducive homes.

An extract from her statement read, “No teacher in full-time employment should be unable to live in comfortable accommodation, within a reasonable distance of his or her place of work. This initiative serves as a financial inducement toward teachers becoming house owners. Housing for teachers tackles poverty, which currently plagues workers in this field and discourages most from aspiring to be teachers.”

The ACPN presidential candidate also spoke on the need to bring a reduction to the number of out-of-school children in the country.

Oby Ezekwesili hinted that her administration if given the chance would reduce the number of out-of-school children to 20 per cent per year.

The APCN candidate was a former Minister of Education in the Government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose tenure ended in 2007 and she made some impact in the country’s education sector then with some still in place today.

Apart from improving education, Oby Ezekwesili has disclosed that her administration would help 80 million Nigerians out of poverty.
