Osinbanjo Vows to Clamp Down on Trouble Makers, Meets with South East Leaders

In a swift reaction to the threat issued by a coalition of Arewa youths in Kaduna last week, the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has vowed to deal decisively with trouble makers who may want to cause disability to the peaceful coexistence that has long been present in the country. This came after some prominent northern elders led by the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University issued statements in support of the Arewa youths.

He made this known on Tuesday, June 14th 2017 when he read the Riot Act to all those trying to cause war in the country. He clearly state that the full force of the law will be applied if necessary. He gave this note of warning when he addressed the thought leaders from the northern part of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa.
Osinbanjo said, “as a government, we are determined to ensure the unity of the country along the lines of our constitution and I want to say that hate and divisive speech or divisive behaviour where it is illegal will be met with the full force of the law”.

As one would think, leaders from the apex Igbo socio-cultural group – Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike met with a group of northern elders in a bid to quench the fire of divisive and hate speeches. Given Nigeria past history and the antecedents of the civil war, this represents a major step in preventing a repeat of past civil unrest.

More so, the Acting President met separately with thought leaders from the concerned ethnic groups (Hausa and Igbo) in order to listen to their stories and, proffer a workable solution that would see Nigeria uphold her unity and maintain the grip as Africa’s leading economy.
