PDP Governors Call on Buhari to Declare State of Emergency on Security

Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security matters due to the worsening situation in the country.

The governors made the call after a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night, affirming that the state of insecurity in the country will affect food security.

The meeting also witnessed the election of Governor Henry Dickson is Bayelsa state as its new chairman.

Until now, the position was held by his Gombe counterpart, Ibrahim Dankwambo who ends his two-year tenure as a state governor May 29.

A communique read by Dankwambo said: “The PDPGF is very concerned about the state of insecurity and how it affects food security as farmers are scared to go to their farms for fear of being killed or kidnapped and urges the President to declare a state of emergency on security matters.

“Following a consensus agreement, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has been elected Chairman of the PDPGF to succeed Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo whose tenure expires by the end of the month.”

Principle of rotation

In a related development, Governor Dickson called on the 36 Governors of the Federation to adhere to the principle of rotation in the election of a new leader for the Nigerian Governors Forum.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, Fidelis Soriwei, the governor said that the decision on who should be the next Chairman òf the Forum should be guided by the time tested principle of rotation between the North and South.

According to the Governor, the next Chairman òf the NGF should come from the South with the end of the tenure of Governor Abdulazeez Yari òf Zamfara State.

Governor Kayode Fayemi emerged as Chairman of the Governors’ Forum after a consensus.

The Governor added that the Governors elected under the platform of the PDP would not contest the position in consonance with the precedence that the NGF Chairman should be a ranking Governor from the ruling political party.
