Peter Gregory Obi, also popularly known as Peter Obi was born in the year 1961 on the 19th of July. He is a famous Nigerian business and politician. Peter Obi is currently the running as vice president with Atiku Abubakar who is the presidential candidate for the 2019 Nigeria general election. He was once impeached as the governor of Anambra but his impeachment was overturned and a court ruling was served to allow him complete a four year term. He was again elected in a subsequent election, election allowing him to go for a second term in office.

Peter Obi Early Life

Peter Obi was born on the 19th of July, 1961 in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. He attended Christ the King College in Onitsha where he obtained his secondary education. In 1980, he proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he obtained a degree in Philosophy.

After his university education in 1984, Peter Obi became a business man and soon he was the Chairman of a company called Next International Nigeria Limited.

Most of Peter Obi’s further education was focused on business. He attended the Chief Executive Program at Lagos Business School. He also studied at Harvard business School where he took courses on Mid to Mid Marketing and Changing the game. Peter Obi also studied Business Policy and Financial Management at the London School of Economics.

Peter Obi Political and Business Career

In 2003, Peter Obi contested in the governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He was said to have lost the election to Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

On the 17th of March, 2006, close to three years after the election, Peter Obi became the Governor of Anambra State after Ngige’s victory was overturned.  However, he was impeached in November of the same year. His impeachment was later reversed and he returned to office on the 9th of February, 2007.

He served as governor of the state till the 29th of May 2007 when he had to leave office after Andy Uba won the elections same year.  Peter obi was again reappointed into the office based on a court ruling stating that he should be left to complete his four year term as the governor. The Supreme Court at the time nullified Uba’s victory for Obi to complete his term which he had won in 2003.

In 2011, Peter was elected for a second term as the governor of Anambra State.

Peter Obi was also the Chairman and Director of a number of companies including Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Limited, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Data Corp Limited, Card Centre Limited and Paymaster Nigeria Limited.

After the 2015 election, Peter Obi was appointed as the Chairman of the Nigeria Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) by the former president Goodluck Jonathan.

Peter Obi is also known to have being the youngest Chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc.

In 2019, Peter Obi was chosen as the running mate (vice presidential candidate) for Atiku Abubakar in the general elections under the People’s Democratic Party.

In 2012, He was awarded best performing Governor on Immunisation in South East Nigeria by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Same year, he got the Azeife Leadership Foundation’s Good Governance Award.

In 2013, Peter Obi was the Silverbird’s Man of the Year and he took the Voice Newspaper’s Award for Outstanding Example in Leadership and Governance in 2014
