The state health commissioner in Plateau, identified to be Dr Kunden Deyin stated that there have been 17 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever with five persons killed in the state.
According to Dr Kunden Deyin, the state health commissioner in plateau, 33 suspected cases of Lassa fever were taken to the laboratory for confirmation and it as then confirmed that 17 persons had cases of Lassa Fever.
In addition, De Kunden Deyin made it clear that 13 persons were on admission are responding to treatment, while others have been discharged after being treated already.
The state health commissioner in Plateau state could not arrive at the number of persons that were discharged from the hospital after being treated.
The state health commissioner, Dr Deyin, stated that 73 persons, who had primary and secondary contacts with the patients, were being monitored at the time of filing this report.
A statement by the state health commissioner, Dr Kunden Deyin read:
“The 73 persons are currently being monitored. We shall do that for 21 days because the incubation period is from six to 21 days. After the 21 days, those not affected by the disease will be discharged from the contact tracing list and certified free of Lassa Fever.”
Dr Kunden Deyin further advised the general public and people who have symptoms such as headache, body pain and a general feeling of being unwell, to promptly report for checks, adding that prompt checks in the hospitals were key to cutting down the mortality rates associated with the Lassa Fever disease.
Dr Deyin is not happy with the fact that patients usually report the matter when it was too late and further called on health workers to quickly make referrals to higher health facilities, when they can not handle cases of Lassa Fever given to them.
Finally, he advised the public to keep environments clean to ward off rodents, and grain stores should be closed.
