Presidency suspends CJN Walter Onnoghen appoints Muhammed Tanko as acting

– Bashir Ahmad revealed that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has been suspended

– He revealed that the suspension was based on the order of Code of Conduct Tribunal

According to a new report via Pres. Muhammadu Buhari’s new media assistant, Bashir Ahmad, he has made it known that the CJN Walter Onnoghen has been suspended while Muhammed Tanko from Bauchi State has been appointed as the acting CJN.

According to the statement, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, was suspended based on order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Bashir Ahmad via his social media handle wrote, “JUST IN: President Muhammad Buhari suspends the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen and appoints Mr. Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed as acting CJN.”

He added that, ”the suspension was based on the order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).”
According to report, the suspension will be on till the end his trial with the CCT.
This latest development is coming after the Court of Appeal had ordered the Code of Conduct Tribunal to suspend the case.
According to the Nigerian constitution, only the Legislative arm of Government (which include House of Representatives and the Senate) can remove the Chief Justice of Nigeria on recommendation from the National Judicial Council NJC.
The now-suspended Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has a case to answer at the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT for non-disclosure of his asset.
Prior to this announcement, the CJN Walter Onnoghen had denied rumours that he had resigned today.

In fact according to report from the suspended CJN spokesman, Awassam Bassey, the Hon CJN is supposed to “swear in members of the 2019 National Assembly, Governorship & State Assembly Election Petition Tribunals tomorrow (Saturday 26th January 2019).”
