Prosecution of Funke Akindele Overbearing – Femi Fani-Kayode

Reactions have continued to trail the prosecution of Nollywood actress and producer, Funke Akindele and her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello for holding house party amidst lockdown order of the Lagos State Government.

Many had lambasted the court and the prosecutors for not practicing what they preached with the court jam-packed with journalists and other stakeholders.

Having been called out o the social media for not laying a good example after sensitizing people on social distancing to curb the spread of the dreaded virus, the celebrity and her husband had invited some people within their residence, Amen Estate to come to celebrate with them. Her husband turned 43 on April 4.

Akindele before her arrest had apologised for what she had done. But she was later arrested by the Lagos State Police command and prosecuted.

The Magistrate gave Akindele and her husband a two-week community service sentence with a fine of 100,000 each after pleading guilty to the offence.

Another celebrity, Naira Marley and a Peoples Democratic (PDP) chieftain, Babatunde Gbadamosi have also been arrested for attending the party.

The Police had also told others who were part of the guests to report themselves.

Reacting to the prosecution, Fani-Kayode who is also a PDP chieftain said she could have a get a warning for what she had done.

“The prosecution & conviction of Funke Akindele was overbearing & unnecessary. A warning would have been enough. This is especially so after she publicly expressed remorse. The court was crowded. Why don’t they prosecute those that were there as well, including the Magistrate?”, he wrote.
