Real Madrid Win Atletico On Penalties To Lift The SuperCopa

Real Madrid defeated city rivals, Atletico Madrid on penalties to lift the Spanish Supercopa title. It’s now been nine finals and nine title wins under the wings of Zinedine Zidane who continues to marshall Real Madrid in the post-Ronaldo era.

After playing a goalless draw in 120 minutes of play, the game was taken to penalties where Real usurped their Wanda Metropolitano folks 4-1 to win the title.

A tense, nerve wracking game had a series of highlights fans of both clubs would be dying to watch time after time.

Fans of the Los Blancos are torn between Federico Valverde and Thibaut Courtois, who the real hero of the game was.

Valverde sacrificed himself by bringing down Alvaro Morata and receiving the red card in what would have been a one-on-one situation between Morata and Courtois.

Morata had a brilliant opportunity to snatch the winner in the final minutes of second extra-time but a last-ditch tackle from Valverde stopped the Spanish striker in his tracks.

Unluckily for Atletico Madrid, they threw away the resulting freekick from just outside the box and couldn’t get the advantage before the game proceeded to penalties.

The Los Blancos goalie on the other hand performed well in the shoot out to help Real well over the line and win the Spanish Supercopa.

It was Real’s skipper, Sergio Ramos who scored what proved to be a decisive penalty kick, sealing a 4-1 win over the city rivals in the penalty shoot-out.

Atletico Madrid had edged out Barcelona in an encounter packed with lots of goals to set up an encounter with Real Madrid in the finals while the latter ousted Valencia to place themselves in the finals.

Real Madrid most recently won the Spanish Supercopa in 2017, when they dubbed Barcelona 5-1 over two legs.

With the SuperCopa now stashed away in their trophy cabinet, they will shift focus to the Laliga where they are drawn with Barcelona at the summit of the table and the Champions League where they are currently in the round-of-16.
