#SayNoToSocialMediaBill Trends As Nigerians Protest
Many Nigerians have started a protest against the Social Media Bill which has been read for the second time at the Nigerian assembly and may soon be passed into law.
The bill is to regulate social media use by the government so that every post made will be scrutinized.
Many have reacted to this demanding that it shouldn’t be passed to law. The number of people protesting also increased after a video of Senator Elisha Abbo defending the bill surfaced online.
In July, the senator was caught on camera assaulting a lady in a sex toy shop and this video went viral online.
The hashtag #SayNoToSocialMediaBill currently trends on Twitter as Nigerians protest against the bill and encourage others to speak against it by signing a petition.

This Social Media Bill is very worrisome. We're used to taking everything so lightly. I doubt most of us understand the implications of this if it gets passed. The things I've been reading are crazy. Freedom of speech is almost all the power we have left #SayNoToSocialMediaBill

I, Joe Abah, #SayNoToSocialMediaBill. It is a grievous infringement on the Constitutional right to free speech. We must be able to speak our minds, even when we are wrong or mistaken, without fear of intimidation, harassment or incarceration by the State.

Any Senator who does not come out OPENLY to #SayNoToSocialMediaBill is part of the useless plot. Citizens should be able to know where the legislator representing them stand on issues. Ask your SENATOR to come out boldly and state their stance on this issue.

Social media is one of the only places in Nigeria where you can freely speak your mind, but now they want to take that away.
Not surprised senator who slapped that young woman is among those supporting this bill.
He felt the power of social media. #SayNoToSocialMediaBill pic.twitter.com/rJ4GeaMa6q

Social media is basically the one thing they cannot control right now and it’s driving them nuts. If they succeed with this then we are in serious trouble. #SayNoToSocialMediaBill

This fool had the guts to talk because he was caught on camera assaulting a woman in a sex you shop, and was shamed. He had the guts to open this his dustbin mouth with fried hair looking like oily rat to support the social media bill. Shame!

Imagine not been able to tweet about police oppression; the Abuja women that were harassed would not have been released. The boys SARS have harassed would not have gotten justice
Nigeria is a joke and social media is our power #SayNoToSocialMediaBill

Senator Elisha said “someone sits in his room & makes a post and in a matter of minutes it’s read in America”. His fear of foreign involvement cannot be overemphasised, social media is that one chance we have at telling the world the ills of our society. #SayNoToSocialMediaBill https://t.co/Lqa54dOtM8
