Son-Inspired Tottenham Take Dortmund To The Cleaners

Tottenham took their German counterparts, Borussia Dortmund to the cleaners with a superb and brilliant second-half performance against the Bundesliga leaders. It must be noted that Spurs have played this year with a nearly depleted squad and most importantly, without the attacking duo of Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Wait. No Kane? Oh yes. But we’ve got our Son. Son Heung-Min opened the scoring for the English side and inspired them to a 3-0 win on Hallowed Turf.

This was Tottenham’s joint highest Champions League victory – a three goal margin – and most importantly this time it was a clean sheet.

That said, it was Dortmund who started on the front foot and Spurs goalie, Hugo Lloris was far too busy in the first half much to the displeasure of Argentine gaffer, Mauricio Pochettino. Jadon Sancho, 18 years was quite impressive up to that point much to the amazement of Gareth Southgate who came to watch the English man play.

Talking about Dortmund’s confidence is the fact that right-back Achraf Hakimi could venture forward to nutmeg Vertonghen and try a shot at goal. What a miss! He would be kicking himself for that.

But after that below average performance from Spurs in the first half, the second-half sparked into life when Son Heung-Min got the goal in the 47th-minute.

It all came from a counter-attack after Achraf Hakimi lunged forward to try to creative something new for Dortmund. However, Spurs soon retrieved the ball and Vertonghen on sighting Son crossed in the ball for Son with the former playing and unorthodox left-back role.

The Belgian crossed the ball into the box and Son left no margin for error as he struck a good volley into the net.

Dortmund were stunned and they pretty much never recovered from that goal. Vertonghen with the assist got the needed boost and he continually surged forward until he got a goal for himself in the final 10 minutes just like we had predicted earlier in our preview.

It wasn’t over still as Fernando Llorente registered himself on the scoresheet only two minutes after he had been introduced.

Son was an inspiration for this Tottenham side with his play infectious. The South Korean who was a centre-forward officially for the match played that position, also left and right flanks and falling back to midfield making him impossible to man-mark.

Vertonghen on the other hand was impressive in a man of the match performance after registering an assist and a goal despite being played in an unorthodox role.

Tottenham 3-0 Borussia Dortmund it ended.
