This is because Webometrics checks a higher number of universities and so includes more Nigerian Universities. Actually, Webometrics is said to cover about 26, 000 universities in the world.

Also, the webometrics ranking of World universities is carried out by the Cybermetrics Lab of the largest public research body in Spain known as CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas) also called the Spanish National Research Council

The platform ranks university mainly based on their web presence and impact, openness and excellence. The ranking explores information on criteria such as number of journals published, presence of international students, number of lecturers, research as well as overall excellence.

Top 10 Nigerian Universities 2019

As Webometrics is yet to release its ranking for the year 2019, here is the 2018 ranking which is their latest.

1. University of Ibadan – ranking 1076^th in the world overall. It takes 571^st in the presence rank, 844^th in terms of Impact, 1,391^st in openness and 1683^rd in overall excellence. Usually, University of Ibadan is regarded as the first and the best university. Also, it was the first Nigerian university to feature in the Times World Best universities in 2016. However, with Covenant University leading it this year, its first position has been altered.
2. University of Nigeria Nsukka– following University of Ibadan on the webometrics list is the University of Nsukka, popularly referred to as UNN. The academic institution ranked 2189^th overall. With 1551^st in presence rank, 3435^th for impact, 1491^st for openness and 2538^th for overall excellence.
3. Obafemi Awolowo University– third best University is Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU. Formerly referred to as University of Ife. The school ranked 2232^nd overall in the world. 3033^rd in presence rank, 3791^st in impact, 2523^rd in openness and 2227^th in overall excellence.
4. Covenant University Ota– our number one University in Nigeria according to the TIMES Higher Education ranking is the fourth in webometrics ranking. Of all universities considered, it was ranked 2253^rd. 1163^rd in presence, 3152^nd in impact, 2516^th in openness and 2595^th in overall excellence.
5. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria ABU – Of all world universities, ABU was ranked 2650^th. 1539^th in presence, 6135^th in impact, 2926^th in openness and 2340^th in overall excellence.
6. University of Lagos – was ranked 2673^rd. 3980^th in presence, 5367^th in impact, 2751^th in openness and 2514^th in overall excellence.
7. University of Ilorin– was ranked number seven in Nigeria, 2850^th in the world. Then 5461^st in presence, 6340^th in impact, 1859^th in openness and 2710^th in overall excellence.
8. University of Port Harcourt– so University of Port Harcourt also made top 10. Popularly referred to as UNIPORT, it was ranked 2897^th in the world. 8660^th in presence, 3609^th in impact, 2580^th in openness and 3473^rd in overall excellence.
9. Federal University of Technology Minna– FUTMINNA was ranked 3067^th in the world by Webometrics. 3197^th in presence, 6302^nd in impact, 2901^st in openness and 3076^th in overall excellence
10. Federal University of Technology, Akure – finally taking the tenth position in Nigeria and 3098^th in the world is FUTA. Ranked 2943^rd in presence, 8514^th in impact, 2622^nd in openness and 2626^th in overall excellence.
