Top 10 Cheapest Federal Universities in Nigeria 2018-2019

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance” thus the saying goes. I actually can’t think of a more apt sentence to start this report with. Education is of utmost importance (and when I mean education here, I mean formal education, most likely in the four walls of an institution; that is if the school doesn’t have more than four walls). However, a great concern to sponsors world over is the price educating a child or more will cost. So here is an attempt at providing a palliative. This is a list of the cheapest federal universities in the country. Therefore, you can make a choice of institution based on financial reasons.

Cheapest Universities in Nigeria

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU Zaria) – Fees N27000

This is one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria, and by far the best in the northern Nigeria. ABU is situated in Kaduna, and it was founded in 1962, initially as the University of Northern Nigeria. This institution has 10 faculties and they are splitted between two campuses. The Samaru campus (main campus) houses the admin offices and 8 other faculties. The Konga campus houses only the Law and Administration faculties. ABU is amongst the top ten schools in Nigeria to study Medicine, Law or Engineering. ABU also has one of the biggest University teaching hospitals in Nigeria.

University of Ibadan (UI) –Fees N30000

This is the premier University in Nigeria, but it wasn’t always a university. It was more of a university college and was affiliated to British schools. It was until after independence that UI became UI and also a full-fledged university. For academic purposes, University if Ibadan is amongst the best places to be, so much so that a lot of people who did not take their first degree in the school try to obtain at least a second degree. UI has a very good medical school. According to most rankings, they are the best in the country. Challenge is that competition to get into UI is very stiff, and they are not very keen on non-academic activities.

Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) – Fees N32000

FUNAAB is located in Ogun state, and is just about 15km from the Abeokuta city centre. It was created in 1988 as one of the premier universities of agriculture. For agricultural related courses, this institution is a great place for learning and research. In addition, their students always come out armed with enough knowledge to become entrepreneurs in the various agric fields.

Bayero University (BUK) – Fees N33000

BUK is another very popular university in Northern Nigeria; it is situated in the ancient city of Kano. Bayero University was also one time a University College, until 1977 when it was upgraded to a full-fledged university. There are 14 faculties in this school, including engineering, law, medicine, and sciences. It also has 3 research centres. If you want to study Islamic studies, Bayero University has a faculty for that.

University of Calabar (UNICAL) – Fees N35000

Ever heard of the phrase, Malabites and Malabresses, this is what UNICAL students call themselves, just as Manchester United fans call themselves Red Devils and Arsenal fans call themselves gunners. University of Calabar is situated in Calabar, Cross River State. It was initially a campus of University of Nigeria Nsukka in the old eastern region.

Abuja University Gwagwalada (UNIABUJA) – Fees N36000

Abuja as a city is very expensive, the most expensive city in Nigeria, but the same cannot be said about UNIABUJA. With a fee of about N36000, it is number 6 on our list of cheapest universities in Nigeria. The campus at Gwagwalada is actually its mini campus and it houses just 3 out of the ten faculties of University of Abuja. The permanent site is located somewhere along Lokoja-Abuja road.  And it houses the admin buildings, senate and 7 faculties.

Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUSOK) – Fees N37000

Named after Usman Danfodio the founder of Sokoto Caliphate, this federal school was established in 1975 in the ancient city of Sokoto. This school operates from four sites; the main campus which hosts the 6 faculties, the research centre and admin offices. The second campus health related faculties (medicine and vetinary medicine). The third site is where the university teaching hospital is. And lastly is its newest site. It is more like a pre degree school. Remedial studies take place here for those wishing to get into the institution. If they pass, they are admitted.

National Open University- Fees N41000

National Open University of Nigeria (Noun) has a very unique approach to education. It operates a programme that is very convenient for many classes of people. Noun operates what is called Open and Distance Learning. They don’t have a campus, so most of the teaching is done by e-mail correspondence and the internet. With over 750 courses, it is the largest institution in Nigeria, based on the number of students it caters for. Noun was popularized some years after former President Obasanjo got a degree in theology from it. This was off course after his tenure as president had ended. Noun has its admin offices at Victoria Island Lagos. It only has one learning centre in Lagos, and it is for Law students. Others have to be by correspondence. Here you only get your course materials after you have paid your fees.

Federal University, Dutsin-Ma Katsina (FUDMA) –Fees N43000

On our list of cheapest federal universities, this is definitely the newest school. It was founded in 2011, built by the administration of the present past President Goodluck Jonathan. The school has 8 faculties, and more departments are being added as the school progresses.

University of Portharcourt (UNIPORT) – Fees N45000

Located in the Garden City of Port Harcourt one of the most expensive cities in Nigeria, Uniport became a university in 1977. It was a university college much like UI and BUK, until 1977. There are 10 faculties in this school, and they offer a lot of marine, oil and gas courses. The University of Portharcourt is the most popular university in the south south.

These are the top ten cheapest federal universities in Nigeria, and none charges up to 50,000. But this is a range of their school fees though. Certain departments in some schools usually charge higher than what the rest of the university charges.  Usually Petroleum engineering, Geology and most of the time medicine charges differently from other departments. For new intakes, there will be a lot of monies to be paid. These fees are paid by section, (a section consists two semesters).
