Gunmen in Thailand’s deep south shot dead two Buddhist monks and injured two others inside a temple in Thailand.

It was reported by various sources that Black-clad assailants carrying guns entered into Rattanaupap temple in Narathiwat province near Malaysia’s border on Friday evening and started firing at the temple.

A local superintendant in Thailand, Pakdi Preechachon, said in a statement that the attack which saw two Buddhist monks shot dead in Thailand’s deep south and saw two other people injured during the incident began at about 7:30 pm on Friday.

It was also stated that the local superintendent in Thailand identified as Pakdi Preechachon, that the unknown gunmen that shot dead two Buddhist monks and injured two, were dressed in black clothes and also entered into the temple through a rear area via a creek.

It is also known that since the year 2004, the clashes between ethnic Malay-Muslim rebels and the Buddhist-majority Thai state that joined together the region over ten (10) years ago have killed close to about 7,000 people, mostly civilians of the ethnicity of Malay-Muslim rebels and the Buddhists monks.

The death toll in the south dropped down to a record low in the year 2018 as Thailand’s junta tightened its security web but violence has boiled over in the previous days, increasing concerns about soft targets at schools and religious institutions and parks as well.

Some time ago in the past, Buddhist monks have been targeted only infrequently.  However, they have been informed to suspend morning alms collection beginning from Saturday in three southern provinces and the southern army commander has instructed security officials to increase safeguards of Islamic leaders who could also be at risk in the process.

The two injured Buddhists monks who were shot by the gunmen have been taken to hospital for adequate treatment and care in order to recover from the injuries.
