Manchester City have gone top of the standings with a 1-0 win over Leicester City, thanks to captain Vincent Kompany screamer from about 30 yards out.
The Citizens pushed to get an early lead but were rebuffed by an organized and obdurate Foxes’ backline the latter had organized against this ferocious attack and that scheme was successful for over an hour till the hour of reckoning for Kompany came about.
It was the centre-back’s first goal and was even more important than the header he scored against Manchester United in 2012 to give his side their first league title.
You could see the emotions tear around the Etihad. It’s the third in their last four games where they would win by that scoreline but three points is what it is. Three points.
After a series of organized passes and plays had taken them nowhere, Vincent Kompany took the initiative after receiving a pass from Aymeric Laporte.
The City defender known by many simply as Kompany took two steps forward with the ball, struck with sheer firepower and tenacity – Harry Maguire could feel the ball whistle past his right shoulder – swerve away from Kasper Schmeichel and kiss the underside of the crossbar before making a way into the underside of the net in the top right corner.
The shouts and screams at the Etihad said it all. If Manchester City win their last game away to Brighton, they would be lifting the league title and there’s absolutely nothing anybody can do about that.
Liverpool who have lost only one game all season might have the top 2 highest goal scorers, best defensive record, PFA Player of the Year but still end up losing the title. What a shame!
Leicester City had their own fair chance in the second half but substitute Iheanacho just sent the ball wide when the ball was cushioned enough for him to tuck the ball into the net. He should have scored!
