– This is because the late Chief MKO Abiola during his lifetime was known for his sportsmanship

According to the latest report, Pres. Muhammadu Buhari during the June 12 Democracy Day Celebration Today has renamed the Abuja National Stadium, it is now to be known as Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Former Nigerian Senator, Shehu Sanni in his statement has applauded President Buhari’s decision to renamed the Stadium after MKO Abiola, he described it a great honour and commendable.

Shehu Sanni added that the late Chief MKO deserves the stadium being named after him having been a pillar of sport during his lifetime.

He, however, disclosed that renaming the Abuja National Stadium after Abiola is an opportunity to renovate and refurbish the arena.

Shehu Sanni said, “Renaming the National Stadium Abuja after Chief MKO Abiola is a great honour and commendable. Abiola was a pillar of sports, he deserves it. This should also be an opportunity to renovate and refurbish the arena for so long in decrepit state.”

Going by record, MKO Abiola during his lifetime was honoured as the first pillar of sport in the whole of Africa by the Confederation of African Football CAF.

MKO Abiola as he was fondly referred to supervised one of the most flamboyant football clubs in the history of football in Nigeria, Abiola Babes.

The report made it known that Abiola Babes always received medial treatment in Germany as at then.

Also, the Stadium in Abeokuta Ogun State is named after MKO Abiola.

Apart from Pres. Muhammadu Buhari, former Nigerian Pres., Goodluck Jonathan tried to renamed University of Lagos UNILAG after MKO Abiola but it did not work out.
