Woodward Asked To Sign Two Players To Keep Pogba
Stan Collymore, former England International has backed Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward to sign defensive-minded duo of West Ham’s Declan Rice and Chelsea’s Ngolo Kante in a bid to keep Pogba at Old Trafford come next season.
French midfielder, Pogba is set to leave Manchester United this summer after telling reporters in Tokyo, Japan that he was looking forward to trying on a new challenge.
Collymore believes that Woodward can only keep Pogba if he signs Ngolo Kante and Declan Rice in order to give the 26 year old the much needed freedom to make key passes in the middle of the park.
Collymore who expressed his thoughts via his Sunday Mirror column said:
“United have also let Pogba down by failing to sign the player or players who’d bring out the best in him.
“Because if he is to become the next outstanding footballer, which he has the ability to do, then he has to have someone of [Didier] Deschamps’ ilk alongside him at club level.
He said Woodward wouldn’t want to see Pogba leave the club but that it is yet to be seen whether a sum exceeding 150 million from interested parties in Juventus and Real Madrid could turn the hands of the Vice Chairman.
“Ed Woodward clearly doesn’t want to allow Pogba – the jewel in his crown – to leave United this summer and we will have to wait and see if Real Madrid or Juventus can match the minimum £150million United would want.
Collymore further added:
“So, if he does end up staying, United ought to be trying to sign two players to set him free.
The England International stressed that even though it could be hard getting Kante or Rice from their respective clubs, it was still worth trying because an addition of players in that ilk would make the red devils’ midfield look more like what a Manchester United should look.
“It would be hard to get [N’Golo] Kante out of Chelsea or Declan Rice out of West Ham, but that doesn’t mean United shouldn’t try for both. With those two alongside Pogba, United’s midfield would look a lot more like a United midfield should look.”
