Workers Strip Naked to Protest Non-payments of Salary

A number of angry workers of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) decided to strip naked yesterday in protest of the alleged non-payment of their salaries and bonuses by the board of the commission.

The aggrieved workers accused the Delta state government and the management of the agency of maltreating them by its continued refusal to pay workers including the controversial 13-month bonus.

The workers went on to say that since 2015, the management of the board had refused to promote and pay retirement entitlements to pensioners of the commission as well as leave bonuses to workers of the commission when the present board assumed office.

The workers threatened to continue with heated protest until the state government gave audience to their demands and that staff welfare was prioritised. They workers warned that if by next week their demands were not met, they would lay siege on the government house and the State House Assembly.

One of the workers who pleaded not to be named for fear of victimization, said,
“What we are protesting is statutory in our engagement later. In 2013 the commission complained that there is no money and appealed that we should allow our salaries to be slashed by 30 per cent and promised that once things improved it shall be restated but up till now it has not.”
