1. Chinese Children Given Expired Polio Vaccines
According to reports on Thursday, a parent discovered earlier this week that a batch of expired oral polio vaccines were being given to children at a health facility nearly one month after their December 11 expiration date.
The local government has since found 145 children received the vaccines between December 11 and January.
However, the World Health Organization’s website says that people given such vaccines that have expired are “unlikely to get sick as a reaction to receiving the vaccine” but warns that they might not be adequately immunized.
2. Defeated Congo Presidential Candidate to Challenge Results in Court
The runner-up in DR Congo’s presidential elections said Friday he would appeal to the Court for a recount of votes as he claimed he won with 61% of the vote.
“We will go to the Constitutional Court on Saturday to demand a recount of the vote,” Martin Fayulu announced to his supporters.
The DR Congo provisional results released on Thursday declared Felix Tshisekedi victor with 38.57% of the vote, just ahead of Fayulu with 34.8%.
3. Saudi Teenager Who Fled ‘Abusive’ Family to Fly to Canada
A Saudi teenager who fled Saudi Arabia for Thailand to escape her “abusive” family is to fly to Canada, Thai officials say.
Thailand’s immigration chief said Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun would be leaving the country on Friday after she was granted asylum in Canada.
However, the office of Canada’s foreign minister said it could not confirm if the 18-year-old had been granted asylum.
Earlier on Friday, several countries, including Canada and Australia were in talks with the UN’s refugee agency to grant asylum to Ms Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, who fears being killed by her relatives if she returns to Saudi Arabia.
The teenager responded to the news by posting a photo of her on twitter with caption: “Hey… I’m happy.”
4. British Supermarkets Stockpiling Ahead of Brexit
With less than 80 days to go until Britain leaves the EU, Supermarkets are stockpiling tinned and dried food.
According to Davis Lewis, chief executive of Tesco, “We looked at the lifecycle and production of product categories that matter most to customers and sat down with all suppliers to discuss their production capability, where they hold stock and if we can help them hold it.”
He said that given the UK imports half of the fresh food it eats, Tesco was “very keen” there will be “no sort of friction” at the border.
Adding: “It’s not possible to do that sort of thing on fresh food, so that’s where the stress would be if there were to be a no-deal.”
Mark & Spencers and Sainsbury’s also announced they were in similar talks ahead of the March 29 deadline.

5. Egypt Arrests Two Germans, Deports One
Egypt has arrested two German nationals on suspicion they tried to join an Islamic State group affiliate and deported one of them.
German media reported earlier this month that two Germans aged 23 and 18 had gone missing after arriving separately in Egypt in December.
One man was arrested at Cairo International Airport over suspicions he was seeking to join the IS jihadist group in Egypt’s northern Sinai region as he was found with maps of North Sinai.
A German foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that the man had arrived back in the country late on Thursday.
The spokesman said the German embassy in Cairo had received confirmation that a second German, aged 18, was also being held and that the mission was seeking consular access to him.
The second German was reported to have been arrested in mid-December after landing in the country.
6. Japanese Olympic Chief Indicted in France for Corruption
Tsunekazu Takeda, the head of Japan’s Olympic Committee has been indicted in Paris for corruption in connection with the award of the 2020 Olympics to Tokyo. He however denied the accusation.
The 71 year old was indicted on December 10 by investigating magistrates for allegedly making a payment of 2.8 million Singapore dollars ($2.3 million) before the Japanese capital was chosen to host the Olympics. Tokyo beat Madrid and Istanbul in the 2013 vote.
“I was not involved in any wrongdoing such as bribery,” he said.
7. Healthy Baby Born to DRC Mother Who Recovered from Ebola
Congo’s Health Ministry says a baby has been born to a mother who recovered from Ebola at an Ebola treatment center on Sunday.
Reports described the birth as “a bright spot” in an outbreak that is the second-deadliest in history.
The recent outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo has killed more than 330 people.

8. S’Africa’s Ruling Party, ANC Gears Up for Elections in May
South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) celebrated its 25 years anniversary this week by counting the party’s successes in the past 25 years.
But reports say the ANC is battling with factionalism and corruption allegations against senior party members, which could affect its standing in the upcoming May national elections.
The ANC was born January 8th, 1912.
9. Robots Walk, Talk, Brew Beer and Take over CES Tech Show
Robots that walk, talk, brew beer and play pingpong took over the Consumer Electronic Show, CES gadget show that held in Las Vegas.
However, the bad news is, “most home robot ventures have failed, because they’re so difficult and expensive to design to a level of intelligence that consumers will find useful”, says Bilal Zuberi, a robotics-oriented venture capitalist at Lux Capital. But that doesn’t keep companies from trying.
10. Fabregas Leaves Chelsea to Join Monaco
Spanish midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, has joined Ligue 1 side Monaco from English Premier League side Chelsea.
“Cesc Fabregas has, today, completed a permanent transfer to Monaco,” Chelsea said on their website, just as Ligue 1 Monaco tweeted a video of Fabregas with a voice-over saying “now it’s time.”
