1. Pope Francis Condemns Materialism in the World

Pope Francis called on people in developed worlds to live simpler, lesser materialistic life.

The 82-year old made this call during his sixth Christmas as the head of the Roman Catholic Church at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

He also condemned the huge divide between the world’s rich and poor, saying Jesus’ birth in a stable should make everyone reflect on the meaning of life.

2. Asian Market Slides Amidst US Uncertainty

Japan Stock Market, Nikkei  closed down 5% on Tuesday, its worst finish since April 2017. Indexes in Shanghai, Bangkok and Taiwan also fell.

Investors have been concerned about US President Trump’s dispute with the US Central Bank Chief and fear another government shutdown.

US stocks had their worst Christmas Eve ever.

3. A Guatemalan Boy Dies in Mexican Government’s Custody

An 8-year-old boy from Guatemala died in the Custody of the Mexican Government early Tuesday. This is the second immigrant child to die in detention this month.

They said the boy showed “signs of potential illness”on Monday and was taken with his father to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico where he reportedly died.

4. US Actor Kevin Spacey Charged with Sexually Assaulting a Teenager

Kevin will appear in court on 7 January over the incident, which allegedly occurred in Nantucket

in July 2016.

Spacey had on Monday posted a video in which he appears to deny any wrongdoing while in character as Frank Underwood in House of Cards.”I’m certainly not going to pay the price for the things I didn’t do.” he said.

5. 40 Migrants Rescued from Boats on Christmas Day in the English Channels.

It is reported that 40 migrants, including two children were rescued in five different incidents from boats on Christmas Day in the English Channels.

Life boats and a coast guard helicopter intercepted a boat carrying 12 people and a child, off the coast of Deal, Kent among other incidents.

The Home Office has said that some of the migrants identified were Iraqis, Iranians and Afghans.

7. End of Messi and Ronaldo?

One of the all times images from 2018 will remain Kylian Mbappe consoling Lionel Messi in Russia, after the final whistle in France’s 4-3 win over Argentina in the last 16 of the World Cup.

Ronaldo and Messi had shared the Ballon d’Or between them in the last decade, winning five each. However, this time around, Ronaldo was second while Messi was fifth, behind Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe.

2018 will probably be remembered as the tournament that marked the end of Messi and Ronaldo’s era.

8. Singer, Shakira Charged with Tax Evasion in Spain

Colombian singer, Shakira has been charged with tax evasion in Spain. The ‘Waka waka’ singer is alleged to have avoided €14.5m in tax by saying she lived in the Bahamas when she actually resided in Catalonia, Spain.

Shakira moved to Barcelona from the Bahamas in 2015 where she lives with her partner, Barcelona footballer, Gerard Piqué.

However, prosecutors are claiming that the star was already living in Spain between 2012 and 2014, saying that she should have paid tax on her income for that time in Spain.

9. Amnesty Says 37 killed in Sudan’s Anti-government Protests

Amnesty International says it has “credible reports” that Sudanese police have killed 37 protesters in clashes during anti-government protests that erupted last week across the country.

In a statement late on Monday, AI said the use of lethal force by security forces against unarmed protesters was “extremely troubling” given that more protests were planned on Tuesday.

10. Machine Will Protect Every Vote, DRC CENI Boss Assures

Cornelle Nangaa, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Independent Electoral Commission, CENI, has reiterated the body’s defense for electronic voting machines despite resistance from opposition parties.

In an interview with French channel TV5Monde’s Journal Afrique, Nangaa said: “The electronic transmission will be there, but the result that will be announced is the result that comes from the ballots.

Opposition parties, the Catholic Church, activists and the United States has cautioned against the use of the machines which they said could lead to a rigged process. The ruling party and government however insisted it is the best way to secure the process.
