Xenophobia: Air Peace Evacuates Another 319 Nigerians from South Africa

  • 817 Nigerians awaiting evacuation.

Air Pace has airlifted the second batch of Nigerians from the OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg.

They are heading for the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

As at 2:58 pm, the airline evacuated about 319 persons.

Kimiebi Ebenfa, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday via a WhatsApp message which reads: “We wish to inform you that the second batch of about 319 willing Nigerian returnees from South Africa has departed O. R. Tambo International Airport Johannesburg, South Africa, today at 14h58 local time.

“The returnees, who were airlifted by Air Peace Airline are expected to arrive Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, today at about 18h58 local time.”

iDONSABI reports that Air Peace had evacuated 187 Nigerians out of the 313 scheduled for the evacuation last Wednesday, following the xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals.

According to the Consul-General, Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, Godwin Adama, the number of registered Nigerians had risen to 1,004.

He added that the technical issues faced during the first evacuation were some Nigerians were not allowed to leave by the Sout African immigration is being addressed.

With the situation on the ground , another 817 Nigerians are awaiting evacuation.
