‘You Possess No Power To Sack VC’ – ASUU Tells Governor Fayemi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, has condemned and criticized the removal of the Ekiti State Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Oye Bandele, by State Governor Kayode Fayemi.

The ASUU-EKSU chairman identified to be Prof. Olufayo Olu-Olu, stated in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, today that the Governor of Ekiti State, Governor Kayode Fayemi, did not follow due process in removing the VC of the Ekiti State University.

Prof Olufayo Olu-Olu stated that the governor also does not have the powers to remove the VC, stressing that, It is the University Governing Council that has the power to remove the VC, after following due process and not the Governor.

The statement of ProfOlu-Olu read:

“The university is an autonomous institution with extant rules and governing regulations.
“The appointment and removal of a VC has procedures under the laws of the university.
“EKSU is not and cannot be an extension of the Ministry of Education.
“The vice chancellor of EKSU was arbitrarily removed. The removal is hereby condemned in strong terms and in its entirety.
“ ASUU-EKSU Congress had, at its meeting on Thursday, January 24, resolved that, “In order to prevent unnecessary crisis and administrative problems, due process should be followed in governing of the university.”

If you would recall extensively that Governor Kayode Fayemi had, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, last week Tuesday, removed Ekiti State University VC together with the Chief Medical Director of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital identified to be Dr. Kolawole Ogundipe; and Provost of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Prof. Mojisola Oyarekua; and announced their replacement in acting capacity.

Governor Kayode Fayemi’s action came after the report of the visitation panels to the University and approval by the State Executive Council of the White Paper on the report.
