FG Redeems 25-Year Old House Promise To Former Super Eagles Coach, Westerhof

The Federal Government of Nigeria have now fulfilled their 25-year old promise to former Super Eagles coach, Clemens Westerhof, for leading the Nigerian team to world glory as are back as 1994.

The minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola who made the presentation on behalf of the FG said it was regrettable that it took so long for the government to redeem their promise.

“It is unfortunate that this is a promise that has taken us so long to redeem. But it is indeed better late than never in this case,’’ he said.

Westerhof led the Super Eagles of Nigeria to their second African Cup of Nations trophy some 14 years after their first in 1980.

The Dutch’s side took the world by surprise with their heroics at the 1994 World Cup, defeating the US before finally losing out in the second round to Italy by a 2-1 scoreline after extra time.

Fashola said the country was grateful to Westerhof for his great achievements with the Nigerian side.

“I thank Westerhof on behalf of all of us for the services he rendered to Nigeria, and we are proud that he has come to receive the documents alive,’’ he said.

The minister went on to say that Westerhof’s apartment was under renovation and that he would only get the keys when the apartment was ready.

Westerhoff in response expressed his gratitude for the gesture of a house which he could retire to when he makes visits to Nigeria. The promised house is located in the Gwagalada area council of the FCT.

“I am thankful to you all, and now I can feel myself more of a Nigerian now. I can now stay here when it is so cold back there in Europe. I also thank God for this blessing of being invited here today to collect my papers. I hope I will soon get my keys, because you never know with Nigeria’’ the Dutch said.
