History of Ogun State Nigeria

Ogun state, one of the thirty six states in Nigeria is situated in the south-western part of the country. Its capital is Abeokuta which is actually the largest city in the state and it consists of twenty (20) local government areas. Ogun state is also the ninth largest state by GDP and it is bordered to the east by Ondo state, to the west by Republic of Benin, to the south by Lagos and to the north by Oyo and Osun states. It is nicknamed ‘Gateway to Nigeria’.

History of Ogun state

Ogun state was created on the 3rd of February 1976 from the former Western State during the regime of General Murtala Mohammed. Abeokuta which is the capital of the state was originally discovered by a hunter named Shodeke (Sodeke) who was the leader of the Egba refugees that fled from the disintegrating Oyo Empire.

Ethnic Groups in Ogun state

Ogun state is a homogenous state because it is highly occupied by the Yoruba ethnic group. It   comprises six (6) ethnic groups namely: the Egbas, the Ijebus, the Eguns, the Egbados, the Aworis and the Remos. Majority of the inhabitants of Ogun state are either Muslims or Christians with few of them practicing ancient traditions.

Population of Ogun State 2019/2020

According to the 2006 national censors, Ogun state is said to have about 3,751,140 people living in it with an Area of 16,980.55 km2 (6,556.23 sq mi).

Some of the major towns in Ogun state are;

Economy of Ogun State

Agriculture is the economic mainstay of Ogun state.  Food crops such as corn (maize), rice, cassava, yams, plantains, and bananas are produced in the state while the cash crops been produced are palm oil, palm kernel, cotton, tobacco, cocoa, kola nuts and rubber. Ogun state has one Federal University: the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; one state government college of education, Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE), (formerly known as Ogun State College of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, one Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, one state government polytechnic, Moshood Abiola Polythechnic (MAPOLY), formerly known as Ogun State Polythechnic, Ojere, Abeokuta, and two state government universities: Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye (formerly known as Ogun State University), and the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Ijebu Ode. There are also few manufacturing and processing industries in the state such as Apex Paints Limited, Sunsteel Industries Limited, Dekoolar Industrial Works Layout, Veepee industries Limited etc.

Government of Ogun state

Ogun state has three Arms of Government: they are

  • The Executive Arm
  • The Legislative Arm
  • The Judicial Arm

 The Executive Arm of Ogun State

This Arm is headed by the State governor assisted by the commissioners who the governor appoints to head different ministries of the State. Ibikunle Amosun is the current governor of Osun State with Yetunde Onanuga as the deputy governor.

The Legislative Arm of Ogun State

This is the State house of Assembly in Osun State. It is made up of 26 members voted in by the electorates of the 26 constituencies in the State. Suraj Adekunbi is the current speaker of the State Assembly. 

The Judicial Arm of Ogun State

This Arm of the State is headed by the chief judge of the State to ensure justice in all areas.  Justice M.A. Dipeolu is the current chief Judge of the State.
