1. Court Approves Trump’s Ban on Transgenders in the Military

The US Supreme Court has approved the ban on transgenders from serving in the miltary by the Trump’s administration.

Trump administration seeks to revoke former President Barack Obama’s policy that allowed transgenders to serve in the military and also demand that the government funded their sex-reassignment surgery.

Trump had tweeted in July 2017 that his administration would not allow transgenders to serve in the US Military.

2. Frustrated British MPs Try to Take Over Brexit

British MPs frustrated with Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit strategy are seeking for fresh strategies with which they could rescue Britain.

Some of their rescue strategies include delaying the planned Britain’s exit from the EU and holding a second referendum.

3.  Pope Francis Goes to Panama

Pope Francis heads to Panama today, where he is expected to highlight the problems of poverty, immigration and Human Rights at a gathering of young Catholics.

The scheduled January 23 to 28 trip for the Church’s World Youth Day will be the pope’s first trip to Central America.

The region has been reported to be caught up in a lot of  migration crisis. This is coming as thousands of people from the region are trying to make their way to the United States to seek asylum and employment.

When the pope visited Mexico in February 2016, Francis criticized the then presidential candidate, Donald Trump’s pledge to build a wall to wall off Mexico in a bid to curb illegal immigration.

4. Chris Brown Arrested over Rape Accusation in France

US R&B singer, Chris Brown, has been arrested in Paris over a case of rape accusation by a 24-year-old young woman.

French officials said Brown and two others were taken into custody after a woman filed a rape allegation in northwest Paris after meeting with them in a nightclub.

The singer, however, has been released after investigations by the French authorities. They didn’t find him guilty of the alleged rape accusation.

5. Ronaldo Gets Heavily Fined For Tax Fraud in Spain

Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday escaped going to jail over tax fraud but was ordered by a Spanish court to pay 3.57 million euros ($4.1 million) for tax fraud he was said to have committed during his time at Real Madrid.

The court had sentenced him to two years imprisonment which was reduced to a fine of 365,000 euros, the reduction in fine adds another penalty of 3.2 million euros, the sentence had read.

A spokesman for the courts said he did not know if this would be added to the 18.8 million euros Spain’s Taxman fine that Ronaldo had previously incurred in June.

Ronaldo, last year joined Italian champions Juventus but returned to Madrid for the court appearance which lasted for about 40 minutes.

“I am very well,” the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had announced to the crowd of reporters gathered outside the court in northeastern Madrid.

6. Eagles Ex-Star, Sodje, Two Brothers Jailed for Looting their Charity Organization

Super Eagles former defender, Efe Sodje and two of his brothers have been jailed for looting tens of thousands of pounds from a charity  organization they set up to help poor African children.

Efe, 46, fellow footballer brother Stephen Sodje, 43, and ex-rugby player brother, Bright Sodje, 52, were convicted by a judge for bringing “shame on their family” as they were convicted of looting their own fundraising campaign, the Sodje Sports Foundation (SSF).

7. Venezuela Accuses US of Trying to Engineer Coup

Venezuela’s Vice President on Tuesday accused US Vice President, Mike Pence for “openly calling for a coup d’etat” ahead of a planned mass protest announced by the opposition to hold on Wednesday.

“Yankee go home! We won’t let them interfere in the affairs of the homeland,” Delcy Rodriguez said on TV.

Her comments came in reaction to American Vice President, Mike Pence’s video on Twitter in which he said the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro was “a dictator with no legitimate claim to power.”

“As the good people of Venezuela, make your voices heard tomorrow, on behalf of the American people, we say, estamos con ustedes. We are with you,” Pence had tweeted.

Venezuela’s Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez accused Pence of having ordered “terrorists” to carry out acts of violence during their Wednesday’s protest.

8. Ghana Police Quiz Lawmaker After Reporter’s Death

A Ghanaian politician who announce on television that he would pay anyone who attacked an undercover reporter has been questioned as part of the investigation into the death of the Ghanaian undercover reporter, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale had worked on high-profile cases and investigations into corruption in African football. He was later gunned down on his way home in Accra last week.

The killing, according to reports, was a brutal attack on Ghana, which prides itself on being a stable democracy in an often turbulent region, and where there is a high level of media freedom.

Lawmaker Agyapong’s name was mentioned in the corruption investigation. He later went on television, showed Hussein-Suale’s photograph and said he would pay anyone who attacked him.

9. President Vows to Probe Zimbabwe Forces Over Crackdown

Zimbabwe President, Emmerson Mnangagwa vowed on Tuesday to investigate security forces over their brutal manhandling on protesters.

His vows had come in a scramble effort to fend off international criticism and restore order on his return to the country.

The manhandling of protesters has underlined fears of a return of the violence and bureaucratic era of Robert Mugabe, who was ousted from power 14 months ago.

“Violence or misconduct by our security forces is unacceptable and a betrayal of the new Zimbabwe,” Mnangagwa said on Twitter. “Chaos and insubordination will not be tolerated. Misconduct will be investigated. If required, heads will roll.”

The Legendary Movie “Panama” has been nominated for the best picture Oscar. The winner in the best picture Oscar will be announced on February 24 in Hollywood.
