1. FG Freezes CJN, Onnoghen’s Five Bank Accounts

The FG has ordered the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, to freeze five bank accounts linked to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The directive emanated from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN.

FG directed the restriction of banking activities on the accounts, pending the determination of the six-count criminal charge it entered against the CJN at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in Abuja.

2. Buhari Declines Assent to 5 Bills

President Buhari has written to the Nigerian Senate declining assent to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission( Amendment) Bill, 2018 and four other bills that were passed by the National Assembly and sent to him for signing into law.

President Buhari in his separate letters to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki on 4th January, 2019 informed the senate of his no assent to the bills.

The rejected bills are the Maritime Security Operations Coordinating Board (Amendment) Bill 2018 and Bankruptcy and Insolvency Bill 2018.

Others are the Federal Polytechnic (Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill 2018.

According to President Buhari, he refused to give assent to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (Amendment) Bill because if he signs them into law, it will give the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission powers of revenue oversight.

The power of revenue oversight currently lies with the President and the Minister of Finance.

3. 3 Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack on Rann

The Nigerian Army announced on Thursday that three soldiers of Operation Lafiya Dole were killed while fighting to repel Boko Haram terrorists who attacked Rann.

It was reported that the terrorists came in eight gun trucks on Tuesday.

The Army also said troops successfully foiled another attempted attack on Wednesday by scores of Boko Haram terrorists trying to infiltrate Gajiram community on Wednesday night.

4. Court Orders Police to Prove Cause for Detaining Melaye

An Abuja High Court on Thursday ordered the Nigerian police to show cause on why it has continued to detain Senator Dino Melaye.

Senator Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West has been in police custody since Jan. 4 after an eight day siege on his Abuja residence.

The senator has approached the court for enforcement of his fundamental right through his counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the order to the police to show cause for Melaye remaining in their continued detention since Jan. 4 which is against what the law stipulated.

The respondent (police) counsel, Simon Lough, told the court that he only got the motion notice on Jan. 16, and needed five days according to the law to reply.

He added that he was and not aware of the order to show cause and prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him reply before January 18.

5. FRSC Recorded 16 Auto Accidents in Plateau – FRSC

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau Command has announced that it recorded 16 vehicle crashes between the 2018 Christmas period and Jan. 15, 2019 across the state.

The command’s Public Education Officer, Andrew Bala, disclosed this in Jos on Thursday.

Bala said that 11 of the crashes were serious while five were minor.

He also stated that no death was recorded in any of the incidents, but said that 77 persons sustained various degrees of injuries.

“The Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes in Plateau commenced on Dec. 19, 2018 and ended on Jan. 15, 2019.

6. FG Continues in Struggle to Control Lassa Fever – Ihekweazu

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said that the FG is intensifying efforts to control Lassa Fever in the country.

Ihekweazu made this known on Thursday in Abuja at a 2-day Lassa fever International conference.

He said the conference marked 50-year of the discovery of Lassa Fever in Nigeria and that the conference was aimed at combining efforts to eradicate the disease.

7. FG Gives Fresh Assurance on ASUU Strike

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has appealed to striking lecturers in Nigerian higher institutions to bear with the FG on the yet to be resolved strike action.

Adamu said that “the strike would soon be called off.”

The Minister spoke on the sideline of the 10th convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State on Thursday.

Adamu announced that efforts were ongoing to address their demands.

The minister implied that the strike had lingered this long because there was no peace.

8. Buhari Reveals What Will Happen to Protesting Soldiers

President Buhari has criticized the demonstrations by soldiers fighting Boko Haram.

Buhari made his criticisms on a live programme aired on NTA tagged ‘The Candidates run’.

He said soldiers, no matter the condition should not protest.

The president noted that those soldiers caught protesting will be court-martialled.

In his words, “It is wrong for soldiers to hold protests, as they will be court Martialed because the system is working.

9. INEC Confirms Rivers APC won’t Participate in 2019 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has heeded the judgment of Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

INEC removed the logo and names of all APC candidates in its final list for the National Assembly election in Rivers State.

Justice James Kolawole Omotosho in his judgment last week issued a restraining order on INEC not to recognize the APC and its candidates for the 2019 general elections in Rivers State as he ordered the candidates to stop campaigning.

10. Woman Arrested for Stealing Blood Stained Pants

The Rivers state police command paraded a 23 year-old lady identified as Joy Ikhine in Obio-Akpor LGA of Rivers State for stealing panties of menstruating females.

The Police said the suspect sends the stolen panties to her supposed sponsors.

The suspect, in her own account, admitted commiting the act but denied collecting stained underwears.

She said: “Yes, they saw me with pants but some of them were my own. I only have one pant of the girl who reported me and there was no blood in the pant when I took it”.

“I have explained to the police why I took the pant. I took the pant because I wanted to wash it for the girl”.

“I usually help people to wash their pants.”
