Ita-Faaji Building Collapse: Lagos State Government set up a five-man committee to investigate the incident

– Lagos State Government, thorough the state’s governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, demands an immediate and thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse.

– The government also demanded that the owner and the developer(s) of the building appear before them, or face the wrath of the government.

– The Civil Society Action Coalition of Education, CSACEFA, also advised the government to provide necessary support for the affected children.

In response to the sad incident that happened in Ita-Faaji last week Wednesday, of a collapse of a three-storey building on the Island, claiming 20 lives, which included school children.

The LSG has decided yesterday to set up a five-man committee to investigate the matter, as well as other buildings in the area that needed demolition.
The panel which is chaired by Engr. Wasiu Olokunola, is expected to seek immediate solutions to the dilapidated buildings across the state.

They have also been charged to intensify the marking and demolition exercise across the state. The committee has been asked to go into action swiftly, and submit their report to the state government in 2 weeks.

According to the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Rotimi Ogunleye, he stated that the committee members were chosen, based on their expertise and experience in their individual fields. Assuring the people of Lagos state they will carry out their assignment as expected.

He further mentioned that the owner of the building, as well as the developers, have been asked to appear before the ministry , so as to answer further questions that could have led to the collapse.

Mr Ogunleye also stated that up to 48 buildings gave been marked for demolition on the Island alone. And more have been marked across the state. He asked for the assistance of the residents of the state to help the government in uncovering buildings that needed to be demolished across the state.

Also, the Acting Lagos Coordinator of the Civil Society Action Coalition of Education for All, CSACEFA, Mrs Aderonke Kimemenihia-Eseka, urged the state government to provide necessary assistance for the affected students, especially in enrolling then to state public schools.

As well as providing necessary support for them, so as to cushion the effect of the incident on the community.
